There is no doubt that a revival of biblical Christianity is much needed in Washington and amongst our elected officials. However, I do not advocate too much political activism amongst our Churches. Human politics are a dirty business by nature, and I do not believe it possible to get too involved in such affairs without becoming soiled ourselves, even with the best of Godly intentions. Our Capitol is full of men who came with good intentions and noble motives but who are now pawns the Establishment and completely oblivious to the filth they're standing in. Power, money, and influence are the coins of the realm and it is obvious that such men have little regard for God and His will, His statutes, or His judgements.
This leads me into the "separation of Church and State".
- Psalms 99:9
- Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.
So, what are we as Christians to believe and do? Was the State and the Church meant to be separate? Or can they coexist and cooperate together to accomplish something meaningful? I can only speak for myself. Consider the following:
- 2 Corinthians 6:14
- Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
God is Holy. His Word is Holy. His Church is meant to be Holy. Holiness, as a divine attribute of God and in relationship to His servants, unmistakably implies "separation". God is separate - He is dependant on nothing. He is complete and perfect in every way and He is perfectly independent. He has no affiliation or fellowship with the fallen things of this world. Kings come and go, nations rise and fall, but God is eternal and unchanging. He is separate. I say all this to illustrate my belief that the Church, as the Holy Bride of Christ, is not to become too entangled in the things of this world and the affairs of carnal men and governments. True freedom can only be found in Jesus. As Americans we are free - free to live, free to worship, free to vote. We are blessed to live in this great country. But political activism is not the solution. By playing politics we are stooping down to compete in an arena where all the rules are corrupt, and the odds are stacked in favor of the house. Like acid, human politics have a corrosive effect which few, if any, are able to resist. Yes, we are called to resist evil. Yes, we are commanded to be salt and light in a dark world. But we do this not by marching on Washington or filing lawsuits to be heard before a corrupt court but by being separate and consectrating ourselves to God. Revival will begin as we kneel before the King, not by lobbying politicians. If this nation is to be changed it will be from the bottom up, not from the top down. Do not be overconcerned by what you see and hear on CNN or FOX. President Obama, the Supreme Court, Socialism, and all the other things which so engage american christianity these days are not the primary problem. Our main issue is the lack of sound biblical teaching and the unwillingness of pastors to preach the whole and complete Word of God. Politics and politicians make for easy targets...as thier unrighteouness is readily evident we find it easy to blame them and desire to engage them thinking that in doing so we can make a difference in our nation. Certainly much easier than preaching the whole council of God to our flocks and lovingly but firmly engaging the sin we find at home in our churches so as to sanctify our people. We need to be concerned primarily with the state of the church, not the state of the union.
